The Power of Too

Remember in algebra, where math was a language of its own and there was exponential power in its expression (pun intended)? If you’ve blocked that out, no worries- this is just a surface revisit with a detour ahead.

The letter x represented a number, while the exponent determined the “power”. When you took the number x represented and multiplied it by itself the indicated power level, you got your result. Are you with me so far?

Now, I want you to think of a characteristic you have been told you have by someone else, or that you have assigned to yourself. That’s what x represents here. Are you sensitive? Angry? Bossy perhaps? Maybe the word quiet, loud, shy, or clumsy comes to mind. Do you have your word? Good. You’re doing great by the way!

Now I want to to take that word and put the power of “too” to it. Too sensitive, too loud, too old, too religious, too political, too. . . .much.

Who put that power there? Who gets the permission to assign the value to “too"? Is it you? A person from your past, or a present company you keep?

What is the result you have in your life when the power of “too” is in the expression?

Maybe this practice exercise brought something to mind for you. If it did, maybe the awareness sparks a new, different path of expression. Maybe you don’t know what to do with what came up. And that’s ok. There’s a path for you also. That path may mean a time of reflection, a time of movement or self expression to process, or (and) a moment to reach out for human support and connection. Wherever the path leads you to, may the “too” of you be welcomed and embraced.

Reach up, reach in, reach out- repeat as needed. Until we meet, I am cheering you on from the sidelines!
